The Cat Spirit
A quiet cobbler in a small town, widowed and solitary, is joined one autumn by a gray stray cat that returns day after day. As the seasons turn, the cat keeps him company through illness and loneliness, until one quiet autumn it leaves as gently as it came. A warm, lingering tale of a faint bond between a man and a creature with a touch of spirit.
The Snake Spirit
In the depths of Green Vine Mountain, the herb-gatherer Zhou Shen frees an injured green serpent. Three years later, during a plague, a mysterious woman in green comes to his door by night, nursing him and the sick villagers back to health. Shen slowly realizes she is the serpent, repaying his old kindness. She leaves him three jade pills and vanishes into the mountain. He tends the sick for the rest of his life, and each spring a green snake waits by the stream.
The Frog Spirit
Old Zhou has tended the lotus pond alone for forty years. One rainy summer a great green frog shares his evenings by the water, and a quiet bond grows between the lonely man and the small spirit of the pond. When autumn comes the frog is gone — yet something is left to keep the water green.
The Tortoise Spirit
A poor scholar turned fisherman spares a weeping giant tortoise, and years later the creature returns to carry him from a flood and warn of worse to come. Across a decade of quiet visits, the tortoise repays kindness with loyalty, until its final farewell leaves only an empty shell and a lesson the villagers will not forget.
The Cricket Spirit
An old man living alone at the end of a village hears a cricket sing from his garden wall every summer night. One moonlit evening he discovers it is no ordinary cricket but a tiny spirit in a green jacket. Through one warm season the man, the little spirit, and the man's grandson keep each other company with songs and small talk, until the cool of autumn sends the cricket away. Some companionship need not last long to be remembered.
The Willow Spirit
A poor ferryman befriends an ancient willow by the Wei River, tending its wounded trunk with wine. When a flood sweeps his boat away, a willow branch draws him ashore and a green-skirted spirit comes each night to help him and his ailing mother. A grasping merchant would fell the tree, but the willow itself drives him off. After his mother's death the spirit returns to the bough, leaving a new shoot — a tale of gratitude between man and plant, in the old manner of Chinese ghost stories.
The Snail Spirit
Old Zhou, a lonely gardener in a small riverside town, tends a forgotten courtyard for thirty years. After the plum rains he finds a snail on his well's stone rim and begins to talk to it. By slow degrees he discovers it is no common snail but a tiny, patient spirit that tends the garden by night. When winter comes the snail burrows to sleep, and Zhou waits — until spring returns it, no larger than a grain of rice, to a courtyard suddenly full of red buds.
The Bamboo Spirit
A poor scholar saves an ancient bamboo from a flood and is visited by its spirit, a maiden who weaves bamboo wares to keep him alive. When a merchant would fell the grove, she protects it; when the scholar leaves for office, she returns to the earth. A tale of gratitude between man and plant, after the manner of old Chinese ghost stories.
