Old Zhou, a shoemaker on the old lane, finds a tiny water-spirit living inside a dewdrop on his windowsill plant. The Earthworms
Old He, a retired fitter, keeps a small plot on the city's edge and nurses its earthworms like kin. In a year of drought and hail they seem to guide him, rising in rows to show where the water must run. When the land is seized for a warehouse, he hauls sacks of living soil into his tower flat. Come spring a worm surfaces in a pot and brings back his late wife's lost brass button. A quiet tale of ground, grief, and what refuses to leave the earth.
The Butterfly Spirit
A scholar named Shen Yanqiu lodges in a deserted garden west of the city. He frees a strange golden butterfly trapped in a spider's web. One summer night it becomes a green-clad maiden, A-Die, who keeps him company to repay his life. When she warns that the old pond's bank will burst, he acts in time and saves the garden. She departs, promising to return when the chrysanthemums turn gold. Each autumn a butterfly visits; he waits for it all his days.
The Firefly
Old Zhou watches a riverside melon patch alone. Each summer a bright firefly he names Little Green settles on his shed pole and he leaves it syrup. One stormy night the firefly wheels in frantic circles and leads him to a boy drowning in the backwater. The firefly never returns to the pole, yet every summer the field glows denser, and Zhou still sets out the syrup for a light that no longer comes.
The Stone Spirit
At the foot of the Cangwu hills a mute boy named A Pan befriends a three-hundred-year-old boulder the villagers call the Cloud-Sleeping Stone. When a drought grips the village, the stone seeps a saving spring; when a rich steward tries to hew it into a grave tablet, the rock answers with sparks, wind, and a seam of wild orchids. The Chronicler of the Strange reflects on spirit, greed, and whom a thing meets.
The Bat
A shuttered cotton mill leaves only its watchman, Tang Fuhai, in the gatehouse. An injured grey bat falls to his sill and stays as his quiet companion before the demolition. On the eve of the tear-down the bat squeals and leads him to a thief whose screwdriver has sparked the old cotton waste alight. Tang puts out the fire; the bat settles back as if nothing happened. When the mill is razed the bat is gone. Tang leaves the window open a crack, and catches a grey flicker he cannot name.
The Eel Spirit
By the Qingxi stream in Reed Flower village lives a filial young fisherman, Shuisheng, who traps eels by night to feed his blind mother. One frosty night he catches a golden eel that speaks and begs for its life; he frees it. Days later a strange mist rises and a woman's voice warns of a coming flood, bidding him flee to high ground with his mother. He obeys; the flood drowns the lower village, but his family survives. Among the ruins he finds a warm golden scale - the eel's repayment.
