WAIC 2026 wrapped up in Shanghai with over 1,100 exhibitors and 300+ global debuts, all pointing in one direction: AI is moving from conversation to action, and AI agents are the next ticket everyone is fighting for.
The 2026 World AI Conference (WAIC) concluded in Shanghai on July 20. For the first time, the exhibition area exceeded 100,000 square meters, hosting over 1,100 enterprises and thousands of exhibits — more than 300 of them world debuts. Walking through the halls of the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition Center, one signal grew impossible to ignore: AI agents have moved from proof-of-concept to the brink of industrial deployment.
"The Year of AI Agents" Is Not Just a Slogan
Zhou Hongyi, founder of 360 Group, dropped a bold claim at the Global Digital Economy Conference in early July: "2026 marks the first year of AI agents." He elaborated at WAIC that the internet's infrastructure will be fundamentally restructured by hundreds of billions of "silicon-based agents," with the majority of internet traffic soon flowing between agents themselves — giving rise to an entirely new "agent economy."
He was not alone. Nearly every major exhibitor at WAIC was telling the same story: move AI from conversation to execution.

- Meteorology: China Meteorological Administration delivered "Mazu" 2.0, an intelligent early-warning system, to Djibouti.
- Scientific research: Shanghai AI Laboratory unveiled "Scholar · DuanYan," a scientific discovery platform covering the full pipeline from hypothesis to validation.
- Power grids: China Southern Power Grid showcased "DaWatt · CloudRui," a distribution network planning agent that has already supported intelligent diagnostics for over 10,000 feeder lines and generated thousands of planning proposals.
- Office productivity: Luxi Technology introduced an offline, on-device AI assistant that eliminates data leakage risks at the source.
Behind these showcases lie some striking numbers: according to Shu Bilei, Deputy Secretary-General of the Beijing Municipal Government, Beijing alone accounts for 30% of China's core AI talent, hosts over 2,500 AI enterprises, and has reached an industry scale of 450 billion RMB.
Embodied Intelligence: 200+ Players on One Stage
Another highlight of this year's conference was embodied intelligence. More than 200 related companies filled the exhibition halls, with robots ranging from industrial arms to home service bots, from quadruped dogs to bipedal humanoids — covering virtually every mainstream form factor.
What set this year apart was the shift from tech demos to real-world evidence. Multiple companies showed video footage of their robots operating in actual factory environments — sorting, transporting, assembling — with noticeably improved generalization in motion planning. The phrase "Sim-to-Real" came up repeatedly, with several vendors reporting millions of training iterations completed in simulation environments.
What Stands Between AI Terminals and Their "iPhone Moment"?
The STEPX Neo inevitably invites comparisons to the smartphone revolution. But replicating that iPhone moment for agent devices requires clearing several hurdles.

For developers and entrepreneurs, now might be the best time to ask: "How does my product fit into the agent ecosystem?" Wait until the infrastructure matures, and the window may already be closed.
