The Umbrella Guest

Published: Jul 15, 2026Reading time: 2 min

An old umbrella-seller gives a stranger a paper umbrella in the rain. After his death, dry umbrellas appear across the rainy city — Grandpa Zhou, still lending.

The south is rainy. In the market lived an old man who sold oil-paper umbrellas, surnamed Zhou, called Umbrella Zhou. His frames were stout, his paper tough; not a drop came through in a storm. Old Zhou had no son and would sit alone under the eaves at year's end, the umbrellas his only company.

One summer night, rain poured. A traveler knocked, soaked through, begging an umbrella to get home. Zhou gave him one; the traveler would not take gold. “Tomorrow in the rain I'll wait for you at the bridge,” he said, and left.

The next day it rained as promised. Old Zhou stood on the bridge and saw the traveler across the water, his umbrella up, walking light and sure — yet under the umbrella his clothes and shoes were dry. The traveler turned, smiled, nodded his thanks, and vanished into the lane. Zhou found it strange; home, he looked at the gifted umbrella: the paper still bore rain-marks, but the handle was warm as a human hand.

After that, whenever it rained, Old Zhou left an umbrella by the door, asking no payment. Neighbors mocked him. “Many in this world forget their umbrellas,” he said. “I'm old, can't deliver to all. I leave them for whoever needs one.” They thought him a fool.

Old Zhou died without illness. That day it rained too. One umbrella went missing from his stall, yet across the city people were seen walking in the rain under old oil-paper umbrellas, clothes untouched by water. Children pointed: “Grandpa Zhou brings umbrellas.”

The Chronicler of the Strange says: Old Zhou helped with an umbrella, asking no reward, remembering no name. The world makes friends by accounting gain and loss; the kindness of one umbrella may outweigh a thousand gold in promises. An umbrella can be lent; a heart cannot. Many borrow umbrellas; few borrow a heart.
