The pivot didn't come out of nowhere. For two years, companies frantically stacked larger and larger models while computing costs soared. Most products looked great in demo videos but crumbled in real-world tasks — all flash, no function. The industry has finally aligned on a new North Star: the finish line isn't a bigger model, it's faster, production-ready AI that delivers measurable value.

Agents: From Chat Windows to Assembly Lines

AI Agents dominated WAIC 2026. Unlike chatbots that merely answer questions, agents autonomously plan and execute multi-step tasks to achieve a goal.

STEPX Neo, the agent-powered smartphone from StepFun, was named one of the conference's "Top Ten Treasures." Its home screen has no app icons — just a conversation input box. Tell it "prepare my presentation materials for tomorrow," and the phone automatically pulls up your calendar, organizes your work context, and generates a PPT framework. Integrated with Ctrip, Alipay, Didi, Meituan, and other services, it functions as a "digital butler" — ordering food, hailing rides, booking tickets, all through natural language.

On the enterprise side, Ant Group launched Agentar 2.0, a platform with 200 pre-built templates for finance, legal, and supply chain roles, enabling companies to deploy custom AI employees without a single line of code. Tencent's WorkBuddy went fully live, allowing anyone to build a personal office assistant through drag-and-drop. IDC projects nearly 50 million new AI "digital employees" will be onboarded globally in 2026.

Embodied Intelligence: AI Gets a Body

If agents are AI's "brain," embodied intelligence gives AI a body.

The embodied intelligence sector gathered over 200 companies at WAIC 2026, showcasing 208 embodied terminals and more than 300 physical robots. Unlike previous years' choreographed performances, this year's robots worked in real time — flexible robotic arms assembling precision auto parts, humanoid robots autonomously sorting logistics, service robots providing home companionship.

On the infrastructure front, Huawei's Ascend 950 super-node made its hardware debut, supporting high-speed interconnection of 1,024 computing cards. China's domestic computing stack has completed its upgrade from single-chip performance battles to full-stack delivery of 10,000-card super-nodes, laying the foundation for mass agent deployment.

From Chinese Solutions to Global Standards

Data released during WAIC shows that AI-related exports now account for 22% of China's total exports, contributing roughly half of export growth. As of July 2026, China has co-developed over 120 international AI standards with global partners, spanning technology foundations, industry applications, governance frameworks, and infrastructure.

The NDRC's "China's Intelligence Benefiting the World (2026)" case collection highlights Chinese AI solutions deployed across more than 20 countries — Brazilian farmers managing fields through smart farm platforms, Malaysian rubber production lines upgraded with lightweight AI algorithms, and Chile's power grid achieving intelligent operations through a "Digital Brain."

WAIC 2026 delivered one unambiguous message: AI is no longer a discipline about "how smart" — it's a craft about "what it can do." From parameter wars to production lines, from showing off to showing up, the industry is undergoing a profound value recalibration.
